Edge Global Congress
November 6, 2019
As data is generated at ever more exponential rates, and globally moves us towards the age of Yottabyte, so compute processing power disperses across enterprise, and cloud resources...
Datacloud: What do you see for the future of the industry?
ES: I think the enterprise adoption of the cloud will continue to drive massive IT transformation. But many people think of the cloud as one homogenous thing, but in reality it is many clouds. It is this multi-cloud environment and connectivity to many cloud service providers that ultimately delivers on the cloud promise. Second to that I would say that businesses will also get more strategic about where they locate their IT infrastructure and I expect to see a shift to the edge for performance reasons for end users.
Datacloud: What is the biggest opportunity in the industry today?
ES: I believe the power of interconnection is just starting to be realized and has huge potential. A 1:1 connection between two businesses interconnects them securely and also has major performance advantages. We have over 170k of these 1:1 direct connections in our facilities all over the world but the rate of adoption is accelerating as the value has become more pronounced, especially in the age of cloud.
Datacloud: What's one of your goals for the next year and how do you expect to achieve it?
ES: At Equinix we are very focused on a successful integration of Telecity. We acquired the company in January and as a result we now have a presence in seven new markets in Europe including Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Turkey. So a large part of my job is to bring these sites into our global data center platform and ensure that customers have a consistent experience globally.
Datacloud: What do you think matters most in the development of the industry and its effect on business and society?
ES: Everything is interconnected – look at things such as IOT, digital payments, big data – all these require a seamless flow of data to successfully work and keep the end user happy. Businesses will need to adopt an interconnection-first approach to their IT infrastructure to ensure they can connect with other ecosystem participants which will be required as more businesses layer services on top of data flows.
Datacloud: Why do you feel awards ceremonies still have a role in today’s e-world?
ES: People want to recognize innovative businesses and their leaders. Many of today’s most successful businesses understand that helping to educate the industry benefits the broader business environment and industry awards help to spotlight those that should be acknowledged and learned from.
